LRT System for Thane
LRT SYSTEM for Thane proposed by R A Rajeev..( Dainik Jagran reporter Anamika More reports)
For the past four months, TMC Commissioner RA Rajeev and his team have been weighing the pros and cons of introducing the tram in the congested city. Surprisingly, the former seems to have outweighed the latter. We present you the list,
When our reporter met with Thane Municipal Commissioner (TMC) R A Rajeev regarding the tram project, he could not stop gushing of its advantages. Four months of research by Rajiv and his team have led to the conclusion that TRAM LRT (light rail transit) can improve the life of Thaneities. Here are some of the highlights of the research:
• Unlike buses, trams give off no exhaust emission at point of use. Compared to motorbuses, the noise of trams is generally perceived to be less disturbing.
• Overhead wires can be used for set up.
• Trams can adapt to the number of passengers by adding more cars during rush hour and removing them during off-peak hours. No additional driver is then required for the trip in comparison to buses. In general, trams provide a higher capacity service than buses.
• Multiple entrances allow trams to load faster than suburban coaches, which tend to have a single entrance. Trams maintain higher overall speeds than buses, if congestion allows.
• The trams’ stops in the street are easily accessible.
• Trams are narrower than buses. This saves valuable space in cities with high population density and narrow streets.
• Trams can track share with mainline railways, servicing smaller towns without requiring special track like metro rail, and at greater speed than buses.
• Passenger comfort is normally superior to buses because of controlled acceleration and braking and curve easement. Rail transport such as used by trams provides a smoother ride than road use by buses.
• Because the tracks are visible, it is easy for potential riders to know where the routes are.
• Vehicles run more efficiently and overall operating costs are lower.
• Trams can run on renewable electricity without the need for very expensive batteries.
• Tram fare is much cheaper than any other transport. In Calcutta, they charge Rs 4 for 4km and Rs 4.30 for above 4km as first-class fare. Second-class fare is Rs 3.50 for 4km and Rs 4 above that.
According to sources, the tram will be introduced first in the city.
Excited commuters
It seems that Thane commuters are more excited to see the tram rather than the metro. Sharad Shetty, school teacher and resident of Thane, says, “I know how the tram runs. With the introduction of tram, it will become easier to keep control on traffic. Thane is developing day by day, and it will be good to see such an affordable mode of transport in the city.”
Achintya Bhowmik, a mechanical engineer, says, "In my opinion, TMC has taken an economically- and environmentally-sound decision. Petrol and diesel prices are soaring, and thus tram can be the common man's best bet. It is difficult to find rickshaws also. If the tram is introduced then more people will use it instead of their private transport.”
Bhumika Adhikari, a Kolkata resident who came to Thane for her studies, says, “Getting rickshaw in Thane is a task. Buses are also always overcrowded. My hometown has trams, and they are a good mode of transport. Also when we travel in buses and rickshaws, the jerks can be felt on potholed roads. The journey will be smoother and faster in trams."
